Home › Events › World’s Biggest Democratic Exercise Concludes

On May 12, India completed the voting process in its general election to elect the 543 Members of Parliament to the 16th Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Parliament). Held over nine days during April 7 – May 12, the elections saw a voter turnout of over 66% i.e. over 540 million people out of the eligible 814 million voters exercised their democratic right to vote – more than the entire population of Europe, or North America, or Central and South America. The hundreds of millions of votes will be counted on May 16 and the election results announced the same day.

In view of the unique nature of these elections, the Election Commission of India, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, facilitated the visit of about 50 delegates from election management bodies of nearly 20 countries – including some from the League of Arab States – for exposure to these elections under the Election Commission’s South-South cooperation initiative. Separately, since 2012, training of 90 mid-career polling officials from over 40 countries has been facilitated at the Election Commission’s India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management, under India’s signature programme for capacity building and training for developing countries – the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme.
